For six years the Valley Women’s Club’s Education Committee has distributed a special bag to each incoming SLV Schools’ kindergartener, filled with materials to help them (and their parents) be better prepared for their school experience. This year a very large special donation was given to the VWC to support the bags and we would like to thank the anonymous local individual for their most generous gift.
The first distribution was at San Lorenzo Valley Elementary’s March 14 Kindergarten Round Up (registration day), where the colorful school bags were received with great excitement by both parents and children. The VWC Education Committee worked diligently to make it an awesome beginning for the young students, with items such as a hardback book, pencil, colored paper, crayons, scissors, library card application and more. For many children it held the first book they have ever owned.
The next round up will be April 18th at the Ludlow Campus behind SLV High School from 8:30am to 12:30pm; this program is a special Transition Kindergarten for younger children to better prepare them for the regular program. Boulder Creek Elementary will have their Kindergarten Orientation 2:00pm to 4:00pm on May 23rd where the bags will be distributed. (For more information regarding registering your child for school in the fall, visit he SLV School District website .
Three 2013 SLV High graduates (now attending Cabrillo College) each received $600.00 dollars to be spent as they wish. They were honored at the recent VWC Annual Meeting and include Yesinia Diaz (nursing program), Scott Lambaren (biology) and Theresa Magdalina Bustamantez (counseling/medical field).Another exciting project the Education Committee has worked for each year for over twenty years is raising funds for our High School Senior Scholarship Fund. Significant scholarships are given to selected seniors who will be attending Cabrillo College, and our annual rummage sale June 14th in Boulder Creek is a major fundraiser for it. (The community is invited to donate items for this event. Hilary Stanley is Scholarship Committee Chair and can accept items starting May 31st. Contact her at 338-2247 for details.) In addition, a special scholarship for a woman entering a math or science field (at any higher education school) will be presented this year, thanks to another member’s donation.
The Valley Women’s Club is grateful for the extraordinary community support that has made these education programs possible.
