Research in the 1990’s, intended to gauge how deeply the hormone changes of menopause disrupt women’s memory, instead proved that women’s forgetfulness was “a function of depression, stress and ‘role overload’ – the multi-tasking of many roles at once.” (Peter M. Meyer, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago) More recent research supports the idea that multi-tasking, by both men and women, causes stress and even the death of brain cells in the hypocampus – an area critical to the formation of new memories. Damage there can “hobble a person’s ability to learn and retain new facts and skills.” (Dr. Jordan Grafman, neuropsychologist, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health) Think about it.
