Recently NOAA presented its completed Coho Restoration Plan, after years of work. The Plan is basically sound and if implemented would be an environmental boon to extensive regions of waterways and habitat of the endangered Salmon. Since the Plan is a guide and has little enforcement power, there is real concern over the value it will have locally unless there is on-going pressure on the agencies, organizations and individuals who should be conforming to the Plan.
The VWC Environmental Committee has committed to a long-term project to focus on important recovery needs that will require interaction with local county and city governments, water districts, private landowners and developers. The benefits will not simply be to the fish, but has the potential to help our region be better prepared for the impacts of global warming and other long-term benefits.
