We know that there is enormous pressure on the amazing coastal redwoods that grace our Valley and points north. Underscoring this is the fact that one major environmental organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, declared coast redwoods, Sequoia Sempervirens, an endangered species. This was just this past December, 2013. The effort to protect second and third growth has become even more significant, as has the need to protect the remaining expanses of Old Growth forest. The stated goal of the IUCN is to “help the world find pragmatic solutions to our most pressing environment and development challenges,” including restoring forests.
