The Redwood Mountain Faire
Excitement Returns for Two Days at Roaring Camp: June 4 & 5

An extraordinary music line-up promises two great days of entertainment at The Redwood Mountain Faire (www.slvrmf.com), Saturday and Sunday, June 4th and 5th at Roaring Camp in Felton. The music (22 bands on two stages) is complemented by beautiful arts and crafts, all hand-made by the artist, an array of Children’s Activities, great food and beverages, and roaming entertainment in the beautiful meadow at Roaring Camp. And it all benefits a wide range of local community organizations. Tickets are on sale and prices are less than last year!! (Be sure to come early; you don’t want to miss anything if you are delayed by construction or long lines!!)

SUNDAY Meadow Stage:

Peter Rowan’s legendary, Grammy-winning Bluegrass will headline the Meadow Stage on Sunday, and the line-up will shine with the warm and wonderful Country singer Lacy J. Dalton. You’ll find out why Santa Cruz fans voted Extra Large Best Band.

You many find yourself holding your breath when the awesome soloists-come-together, Ginny Mitchell, Mary McCaslin, Sherry Austin, Patti Maxine, Sharon Allen, Tracy Parker, perform as The Velveteens. And the exceptional high school jazz/funk wizards, Grae’s Academy, will start the morning in high style.

SUNDAY Creekside Stage:

Featured on the very special Creekside Stage Sunday is the remarkable Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit playing their unique Bluegrass and Country Western. The rest of Creekside Stage’s Sunday line up will truly rock with the powerful Who’s Holdin’, a very popular local favorite. Plan to swing with “The Patsy Cline Spectacular” featuring Carolyn Sills, who will take you back in time. Be there for the truly classic sounds of Blue Chevrolet, and the faithful Rock & Blues of Back to Nowhere will have you dancing, so arrive early!

SATURDAY Meadow Stage:

Sambada’ brings heart-pounding Afro-Brazilian Dance Music to headline the Meadow Stage on Saturday; they are as amazing to watch as to hear! Return to the 60’s with the remarkable Almost Cut My Hair literally channeling Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – wonderful voices, wonderful instruments. Precede that with Soul Majestic’s undeniably creative reggae for irresistible rhythm, and welcome Moon Alice’s return to the Faire with their unconventional hippie sound — but be there earlier to hear Michael Gaither sing a story you will recognize and feel good about, and rush in when the gates open to watch some amazing teens, Jackie Rocks, rock!

SATURDAY Creekside Stage:

Headlining Saturday is Jay Lingo, returning to the Faire with his Country-Western themed songs and resonant voice. Saturday you’ll be feeling great listening to the Blues of Vito and Friends, as Vito “writes” lyrics, often made up on the spot, the band will improvise as well with an on the spot blues jam. Jeff Stewman & (his) Friends bring classic R&B to the Faire with Jeff’s warm and soulful voice. You’ll be astonished by the rock and blues of the young Coffis Brothers & the Mountain Men, whose joy in playing is catching. Be there when real surfers, the Parafins, play real Surf Music, drawing inspiration from the local surf culture in their California style of music. The day will start with the wonderful spirit of Sweet Jam’s Heart-Rock opening the day on this most intimate stage.

PRICES: Adults $18, or 2-for-$30 in advance ($20 each day of); Seniors/Students $13, or 2-for-$25 in advance ($15 each day of); ten and under FREE. Parking is $5. Please, no dogs, no coolers. Gates open at 10:30 (come earlier to park). Music and fun starts at 11a.m., and lasts until 7 p.m.!

The Hammer-Marcum Award
Put October 23rd on Your Calendar

The 2011 Hammer-Marcum Award will take place on Sunday, October 23rd, but you can start gathering information on someone you would like to nominate right away! And share the form with anyone you think may have a nominee in mind. The nomination forms are due Saturday, September 10th. Forms are online on the Valley Women’s Club’s website (www.vwcweb.org) and by calling Nancy at 345-1555.

The Hammer-Marcum Award was created in 1987 by The Valley Women’s Club to honor two special people in the San Lorenzo Valley who had given hundreds of hours to improve the quality of life of thousands of local residents: Mary Hammer and Annette Marcum. (Since the Award was created, both Annette and Mary have continued their community activities and still do.) The Award is presented to one or more individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the San Lorenzo Valley through action, awareness and leadership in environmental, educational, social and/or political concerns which affect the health and welfare of our community; they must have worked in the SLV for five or more years and must have done something notable in the last year.

Letter in Support of New Universal Health Care Proposal

At its April meeting, the VWC Board voted to send State Senator Mark leno a letter in strong support of his proposed California Universal Healthcare Act (SB810), which would cover every Californian with comprehensive, affordable health insurance and allow every Californian to choose his or her own physician.

The measure proposes that Californians be covered by a single plan that provides medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage, as well as hospitalization, emergency room care, laboratory work, skilled nursing care, mental health care, drug addiction rehabilitation, and chiropractic care.
The measure is making its way through senate committees in Sacramento.

AND THE WINNER IS . . .
Scholarship Winner Announced; Rummage Sale Coming Soon

The Scholarship Committee has chosen Mia Orlando of Boulder Creek as next year’s winner of our scholarship award, Ms. Orlando is planning to attend Cabrillo College and major in Business with an emphasis in Accounting. The award was announced at the San Lorenzo Valley High School Senior Awards Night on May 25.

Many thanks to the Scholarship Committee for its work this year. Hilary Stanley is Chair of the Committee. Members are Sheila De Lany, Sandy Love, Marge Deason and Donna Ziel. Funds to support our scholarship awards come from donations and from the proceeds from the annual rummage sale. Scholarships are available to graduating seniors (male and female) from San Lorenzo Valley High School who are going to Cabrillo College.

The VWC Rummage Sale will be held on Saturday, June 18 in Boulder Creek. Hilary Stanley will be accepting donations of gently used goods after the first of June. Please call her (338-2247) to arrange for drop-off. We are looking for such things as toys, kitchen ware, tools, and small household furniture – all in good condition. No books or clothing, please!
