SLV High Students Handling Survey for MBUAPCD
The SLV High School AP Statistics Class is conducting a survey of home heating practices in the San Lorenzo Valley, according to David Frisbey, Air Quality Planner for the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District. This survey will help us understand SLV residents’ perception of the relationship between the use of wood burning stoves/fireplaces and smoke in the SLV, which has been demonstrated to contribute to unhealthy levels of particulates and pollutants during the winter months in certain parts of the SLV.
These pollutants can exacerbate existing problems, such as lung problems in the elderly or youngsters with asthma, or cause problems in otherwise healthy individuals. The MBUAPCD is taking a close look at air pollution in the SLV. You may remember articles on the new regulations regarding outdoor burning of yard trimmings recently covered in this Newsletter and in local media. Wood burning stoves have an even greater impact on our health!
You can affect the thinking of those writing and enforcing regulations relating to wood-burning stoves by taking this survey, and sharing it with neighbors and friends so they too can participate.
